In November 2000, experienced fisherman Olaf Solsker pulled something from the west coast of Greenland that he had never seen before. The unknown fish was handed over to the Danish scientist Peter Meller from the University of Copenhagen. A scientist confirmed in February 2001 that the unfamiliar fish is Dissotichus eleginoides — known as the Patagonian toothfish. Until now, it was caught no north of the coast of Uruguay, and suddenly it was caught on the other side of the world in the Arctic, 10,000 km from its usual habitat, at a depth of 1,300 meters.
Chilean sea bass (Patagonian toothfish) is one of the tastiest premium fish available on the market, well known among gourmets for its signature white meat. It is called «white gold» not so much for the rarity of meat, but for its value in terms of food consumption. Patagonian toothfish is a deep-sea fish that lives in the cold-temperate waters of the Southern Hemisphere, at temperatures no higher than 11C, at a depth of 50 to 3850 meters. According to scientists, most likely, she swam so far from home through the corridors of cold water that helped her to overcome the tropical and equatorial seas. This discovery shed light on why the same fish species can exist near the South and North Poles, despite the warm oceans separating them. A shipment of this exotic fish is eagerly awaited in the city of Ivalo.
